Amongst the communal riots that erupt in the city, Tara shelters a wayward Sakina from a crazed mob and a bond that blossoms into love is created. The two eventually get married and have a son. The happy family, now living in Amritsar, gets the shock of their lives when Sakina learns that her father (Amrish Puri), whom she previously believed died in the riots back in Amritsar, is still alive after seeing his picture in a tattered, old newspaper. Upon contacting him, Sakina's father, now the mayor of Lahore in Pakistan, arranges for his daughter to arrive in Lahore to see him. Sakina leaves for Lahore minus Tara and her son, and upon reaching the city, learns of her father's plans for her - plans that include forcing Sakina to forget about her family and start life anew in Pakistan. Then begins an extraordinary journey which will lead Tara to cross the border into Pakistan to find his love Sakina

Ambientado em 1947, durante a partição da Índia, o filme conta a história de um motorista de caminhão, Tara Singh, um sikh Jatt, que se apaixona por uma garota muçulmana, Sakina, pertencente a uma aristocrática família. A história começa com os sikhs e hindus sendo atacados por muçulmanos no Paquistão ao tentar migrar para a Índia em um trem em resposta à morte de muçulmanos que vão da Índia para o Paquistão. Para se vingar, sikhs e hindus reagem, fazendo a mesma coisa. Durante os tumultos hindus e muçulmanos que eclodiram logo após a partição, Tara salva Sakina de uma turba assassina persegui-la quando ela não conseguiu chegar até o trem depois de ser empurrada e perdida na multidão. Como a máfia quer violentá-la e depois matá-la, Tara Singh defende Sakina e disfarça-a como um sikh pra protegê-la. Enquanto dirigia de volta para casa de Tara, a história tem um flash-back principal mostrando a relação entre Tara e Sakina antes deste incidente e como eles se conheceram.
