This adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's novel is rather flat and forgettable, riding as far as it does on the magnetic allure of Greta Garbo. She is magic in the early scenes, playful and engaging; less compelling once guilt over her choices takes over, but it is still Garbo, and she helps prevent this mercifully brief epic from sinking completely. A few memorable scenes, a waste of the great Herbert Marshall, George Brent at his most dreary. 5/10.
