Vier vrienden, studenten uit Gent die we leren kennen in de jaren ’80. Geëngageerde jonge twintigers. Thomas en Mario zijn beste maten voor het leven. Daarna is er het leven. Thomas wordt dokter. Mario blijft de strijdlustige man, met grote mond en theatrale plannen voor een beloftevolle carrière in de politiek, in Gent waar hij inmiddels is gaan wonen. Tot hij enkele jaren later gediagnosticeerd wordt met MS, alles onder het oog van Thomas, die de aftakeling van zijn vriend van dichtbij zal moeten meemaken...

Based on a true story, 'Tot altijd' introduces us to a band of friends in the eighties, who spend their days enjoying their youth and turbulent (love) life. Years later, Thomas, a recent medicine graduate and Mario's closest friend, gets stuck between a rock and a hard place when he diagnoses Mario with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). Though not a fatal disease, it slowly consumes the patient's bodily functions and - in some cases - their minds. Mario becomes the leading spokesman for the action group "Waardig Sterven" ("Dignified Death") in support of the Belgian legalisation of euthanasia. Thomas does everything in his power to avoid losing his best friend, but also can't stand the sight of his continued degeneration...

Quatre amis. Nous faisons leur connaissance dans les années 80. Ce sont alors des jeunes gens engagés, dans la vingtaine, opposés aux missiles nucléaires sur la base aérienne de Florennes. Et puis, la vie suit son cours. Jusqu'à ce jour où, quelques années plus tard, on lui diagnostique une sclérose en plaques, le tout sous le regard de Thomas. Si Mario garde beaucoup de courage et d'humour au début, afin de mieux supporter son destin et sa maladie, il finit rapidement par dire qu'il continuera de se battre tant que sa vie restera agréable. Mais que dès qu'elle ne sera plus digne de ce nom, son ami devra l'aider à « prendre l'issue de secours ». A tout jamais est l'histoire d'une amitié magnifique et inconditionnelle.
