Aldo Piscitello, a minor government clerk, is forced in 1934 to join the Fascist party. When the war comes, he finds himself able only to talk ineffectually in secret against Mussolini, even as his own son Giovanni is sent into battle. By the end of the war, Aldo has found the courage to stand up for his beliefs, but by then it is too late.

Aldo Piscitello, ein unbedeutender Regierungsbeamter, wird 1934 gezwungen, der faschistischen Partei beizutreten. Als der Krieg ausbricht, kann er nur – ohne Auswirkungen – im Geheimen gegen Mussolini sprechen, selbst als sein eigener Sohn Giovanni in die Schlacht geschickt wird. Am Ende des Krieges findet Aldo den Mut, für seine Überzeugungen einzustehen, aber jetzt ist es zu spät...

Nel 1935 un impiegato è costretto, contravvenendo al suo crdo politico, a prendere la tessera fascista. Subito dopo la guerra, al momento dei conti, verrà accusato di essere stato fascista e per questo verrà licenziato.
