Orphan turns bad, finds redemption with some help from boyhood pal. This movie is of interest because of the presence of a young Steve McQueen, the leading man being John Drew Barrymore, father of the more famous Drew, and for being based on a novel by Harold Robbins, famous for steamy writing in his day.

Nueva York, 1912. Una mujer fallece tras dar a luz un niño. El chico, llamado Francis Kane, nace como un huérfano en el seno de una comunidad católica. En 1928, Francis se hace amigo de Martin Cabell y se enamora de la hermana de éste, Julie, que desea ser cantante. También descubre que es judío -todo un shock para él-, y se pone a trabajar para un gánster local, 'Silk' Fennelli, pero decide salir huyendo después de un tiroteo. Siete duros años después, Francis regresa a Nueva York, pero ya no es el mismo. Se pone a trabajar de nuevo para Fennelli, que ahora es el protector y amante de Julie, pero Francis utiliza su talento y su ambición para subir rápidamente dentro del mundo del crimen neoyorquino.
