on his birthday, Spencer Tracy, one of the great male stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
He won the Academy Award for Best Actor twice in a row, for the movies "Captains Courageous (1938)" and "Boys Town (1939)".

Not one of my favourite Golden Age stars - I sometimes find him hammy - but he could certainly be wonderful. Personal favourite performances: Fury, Libeled Lady and Father of the Bride. I also have a huge soft spot for Captains Courageous despite his mugging.

Spencer Tracy was always my late mom's all-time favourite actor, not only because she thought he was an amazing actor (which he was), but because - she often remarked - he looked like her father.

I'm with Rudely, that Tracy is sometimes win, sometimes miss, for me, depending on the movie and how far he went with the acting. Captains Courageous, Boys Town, and Father of the Bride (along with some other titles) are definitely performances I'm a fan of.

Bad Day At Black Rock - Superlative!

I saw him recently in DR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE. Not his finest hour! My personal fave of his: ADAM'S RIB with Hepburn

Father of the Bride was my favourite and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner relaxed
