Vittorio Gassman (Gènova, Itàlia, 1 de setembre de 1922 – Roma, Itàlia, 29 de juny de 2000), conegut popularment a Itàlia com Il Mattatore, fou un actor teatral i cinematogràfic i director de cinema italià.

Vittorio Gassman Knight Grand Cross OMRI (Italian pronunciation: [vitˈtɔːrjo ˈɡazman]; born Gassmann; 1 September 1922 – 29 June 2000), popularly known as Il Mattatore, was an Italian actor, director and screenwriter.

He is considered one of the greatest Italian actors, whose career includes both important productions as well as dozens of divertissements.

Gassman's debut was in Milan, in 1942, with Alda Borelli in Niccodemi's La Nemica (theatre). He then moved to Rome and acted at the Teatro Eliseo joining Tino Carraro and Ernesto Calindri in a team that remained famous for some time; with them he acted in a range of plays from bourgeois comedy to sophisticated intellectual theatre. In 1946, he made his film debut in Preludio d'amore, while only one year later he appeared in five films. In 1948 he played in Riso amaro.

It was with Luchino Visconti's company that Gassman achieved his mature successes, together with Paolo Stoppa, Rina Morelli and Paola Borboni. He played Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams' Un tram che si chiama desiderio (A Streetcar Named Desire), as well as in Come vi piace (As You Like It) by Shakespeare and Oreste (by Vittorio Alfieri). He joined the Teatro Nazionale with Tommaso Salvini, Massimo Girotti, Arnoldo Foà to create a successful Peer Gynt (by Henrik Ibsen). With Luigi Squarzina in 1952 he co-founded and co-directed the Teatro d'Arte Italiano, producing the first complete version of Hamlet in Italy, followed by rare works such as Seneca's Thyestes and Aeschylus's The Persians.

In cinema, he worked frequently both in Italy and abroad. He met and fell in love with American actress Shelley Winters while she was touring Europe with fiancé Farley Granger. When Winters was forced to return to Hollywood to fulfill contractual obligations, he followed her there and married her. With his natural charisma and his fluency in English he scored a number of roles in Hollywood, including Rhapsody with Elizabeth Taylor and The Glass Wall before returning to Italy and the theatre.

On 29 June 2000, Gassman died of a heart attack in his sleep at his home in Rome at the age of 77. He was buried at Campo Verano.

Il passe son adolescence à Rome. Là, outre sa passion pour le sport, il révèle des dons précoces pour l'écriture. En sortant du lycée, en 1941, il s'inscrit à l'université de Rome mais, sous l'impulsion de sa mère, il suit également les cours de l'Académie nationale d'art dramatique que dirige Silvio D'Amico. Repéré pour ses qualités, Vittorio Gassman se tourne vers le théâtre en 1943.

Acteur brillant, Gassman attire aussi l'attention des producteurs. En 1946, il fait ses débuts au cinéma à 24 ans dans Daniele Cortis (en) de Mario Soldati. La grande majorité des films dans lesquels il joue entre 1946 et 1958 sont des films de genre, mélodrames, films d'aventures ou adaptations littéraires. Gassman, attribuant peu de valeur artistique au cinéma, joue dans des films ayant peu d'intérêt artistique à l'exception de Daniele Cortis, Le Chevalier mystérieux de Riccardo Freda et de Riz amer de Giuseppe De Santis en 1948. Les grands rôles sont tardifs, si l'on excepte Riz amer. Son contrat hollywoodien n'a aucun retentissement, quoique ses prestations soient souvent magistrales, dans Guerre et paix notamment.

Sa carrière théâtrale, à laquelle il se consacre prioritairemen, moins connue en France que sa carrière cinématographique, connaît un grand succès en Italie. En 1948-1949, il joue dans la compagnie dirigée par Luchino Visconti et les rôles qu'il interprète sous sa direction, notamment Un tramway nommé Désir, lui valent de véritables triomphes. En 1950, il est nommé premier acteur et chef de troupe du Théâtre National dirigé par Guido Salvini (it). Il fait alors ses débuts de metteur en scène avec Peer Gynt de Henryk Ibsen. En 1952, il fonde le Teatro d'Arte italiano qu'il dirige en compagnie de Luigi Squarzina (it). Il y met en scène et interprète un mémorable Hamlet de William Shakespeare. En 1955, il monte Kean d'Alexandre Dumas dans la version revue par Jean-Paul Sartre, puis en 1957, Othello ou le Maure de Venise de Shakespeare.

Parallèlement, il continue à travailler pour le cinéma, sans grande conviction. Mais en 1958, le succès du Pigeon de Mario Monicelli révèle son véritable talent d'acteur comique insoupçonné jusque-là.

En 1961, il crée sa compagnie théâtrale Le Théâtre populaire Italien.
