Linda Ann Gray (born September 12, 1940) is an American film, stage and television actress, director, producer and former model, best known for her role as Sue Ellen Ewing, the long-suffering wife of Larry Hagman's character J.R. Ewing on the CBS television drama series Dallas (1978–1989, 1991, 2012–2014), for which she was nominated for the 1981 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The role also earned her two Golden Globe Awards.

Gray began her career in the 1960s in television commercials. In the 1970s, she appeared in numerous TV series before landing the role of Sue Ellen Ewing in 1978. After leaving Dallas in 1989, she appeared opposite Sylvester Stallone in the 1991 film Oscar. From 1994 to 1995, she played a leading role in the Fox drama series Models Inc., and also starred in TV movies, including Moment of Truth: Why My Daughter? (1993) and Accidental Meeting (1994). She went on to reprise the role of Sue Ellen in Dallas: J.R. Returns (1996), Dallas: War of the Ewings (1998), and in the TNT series Dallas (2012–2014), which continued the original series.

On stage, Gray starred as Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate in the West End of London in 2001, then on Broadway the following year. In 2007, she starred as Aurora Greenaway in the world premiere production of Terms of Endearment at the Theatre Royal, York and stayed with the production when it toured the United Kingdom. After the second Dallas was cancelled in 2014, Gray again took to the stage, this time in the role of the Fairy Godmother in a London production of Cinderella.

Linda Gray was born in 1940 in Santa Monica, California. She grew up in Culver City, California, where her father, Leslie, who was a watchmaker, had a shop.

Before acting, Gray worked as a model in the 1960s and began her acting career in television commercials, nearly 400 of them—and also made brief appearances in feature films, such as Under the Yum Yum Tree and Palm Springs Weekend in 1963.

Gray began her professional acting career in the 1970s with guest roles on many television series such as Marcus Welby, M.D., McCloud, and Switch, prior to signing with Universal Studios in 1974. She also appeared in the films The Big Rip-Off (1975) and Dogs (1976). In 1977, she was cast as fashion model Linda Murkland, the first transgender series regular on American television, in the television series All That Glitters. Elle est notamment connue du grand public pour son rôle de Sue Ellen Ewing dans la série télévisée américaine Dallas, diffusée à partir de 1978.

Née à Santa Monica, Linda Gray a grandi à Culver City en Californie. Son père, Leslie est un horloger, «présent comme un meuble» dit-elle dans son autobiographie. Atteinte de polio durant son enfance, elle dit avoir manqué d'affection.

Elle devient mannequin dans les années 1960, puis actrice pour des publicités (on voit ses jambes sur l'affiche du film Le Lauréat).

Linda Gray est surtout connue pour son rôle dans la série télévisée phare des années 1980, Dallas, dans laquelle elle incarne durant 217 épisodes, de 1978 à 1989 puis en 1991, le personnage de Sue Ellen Ewing, l'épouse du magnat du pétrole texan J.R. Ewing (incarné par Larry Hagman). Elle reprendra son rôle en 2012 à l'occasion d'une nouvelle version de la série.

En 1991, l'actrice fait une incursion au cinéma en jouant un second rôle dans la comédie L'embrouille est dans le sac aux côtés de Sylvester Stallone, Ornella Muti et de Marisa Tomei.

En 1994, Linda Gray apparaît en tant que guest-star dans le feuilleton Melrose Place dont Heather Locklear est la vedette.

Entre 2004 et 2005, la comédienne intègre la distribution du célèbre soap-opera Amour, Gloire et Beauté.

Elle participe en 2008 à 90210 Beverly Hills: Nouvelle Génération, le spin-off de la série Beverly Hills 90210.

En 2016, Linda Gray crée l'évènement au Royaume-Uni en rejoignant, le temps de quelques épisodes, le casting du feuilleton britannique diffusé sur Channel 4, Hollyoaks, dans le rôle de Tabitha Maxwell-Brown, la mère du personnage de Marnie Nightingale, interprété par Lysette Anthony.

En 1962, Linda Gray se marie avec Ed Trasher, un graphiste renommé avec qui elle a deux enfants: Jeff et Kehly; elle divorcera au bout de 20 ans de mariage en 1983.

En 1990, elle perd sa sœur Betty, emportée par un cancer du sein.

Le 23 novembre 2020, elle annonce sur les réseaux sociaux la mort de son fils unique, Jeff Thrasher, âgé de 56 ans, producteur et réalisateur pour la télévision.

1994-ben megkapta Hillary Michaels szerepét a Melrose Place című sorozatban, a 2. évad utolsó 4 részében szerepelt. 2004-ben visszatért a szappanoperák világába. 2005-ben játszott a McBride: It's Murder, Madam (McBridge: Gyilkosság volt, hölgyem) című krimiben. 2006-ban epizódszerepet kapott a Pepper Dennis című sorozatban. Jelentős szerepet kapott a Reflections of a Life című drámában is. 2008-ban epizódszerepet kapott a 90210 című sorozatban.
