Haar voorouders komen uit de staat Uttar Pradesh in India, die ze tijdens de Britse periode hebben verlaten. Haar familie vestigde zich op de Fiji-eilanden en haar ouders verhuisden naar Canada. Ze heeft een oudere broer, Sunil, die negen jaar ouder is dan zij. Hun vader is een hindoe-priester.

Sharma begon acteren als een carrière na te streven toen ze in de twintig was.
