Discuss Basil Rathbone

I became a huge, like huge, Basil Rathbone fan just under two years ago when my dad introduced me to his Sherlock Holmes movies. I got hooked pretty quick, and that how I became the classic film fanatic I am today. I still like Basil a lot, but have other favorites now as well, mostly because I've already seen most of his good movies, and, admittedly, a few of his not so good ones. Some of my favorite Basil performances (besides Sherlock Holmes) are John Black from The Comedy of Terrors, and Levasseur from Captain Blood. So, any other fans out there? Fee free to respond and have some friendly, intelligent conversation about the Great Baz!

Definite lifelong Bazz fan here. He's easily one of my all-time fave classic films actors. https://www.themoviedb.org/discuss/58cac0f0925141324800147d

Cool! Glad to hear I'm not the only one! Do you have a favorite performance of his?

First of all, nice to meet you, barry! I see you recently joined TMDb. Welcome! fireworks

I tend to especially gravitate to Mr. Rathbone's early '30s through mid '40s films, as that's the span of years (in addition to the 1920s) that I've always felt particularly drawn to in general. In The Bazz's case, he was at his youngest and most dashing during those years.

I suppose that if having to identify a couple favourite performances, I'll go with Sir Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), also Alexei Karenin in Anna Karenina (1935), mainly because I recall them so readily.

Having said that, The Bazz's films that are included in my personal collection are 1937's Confession (as Michael Michailow), 1942's Crossroads (in which he portrays Henri Sarrou), and 1945's The Woman in Green (portraying Sherlock Holmes) - each which is pretty terrific. (I used to also have the DVD of Anna Karenina, but for some reason donated it to my local public library years back - and wish I hadn't.) Seems like I probably also have another one or two of his movies, though I can't remember which ones, if so.

It's great to meet another Classic Films fan!

Please check out the following list of titles I've created TMDb threads for: https://www.themoviedb.org/list/118052

One of my absolute favourite actors, too. Favourites - as well as those already mentioned (his Karenin in Anna Karenina is pretty much definitive to the degree that I couldn't shake Rathbone from my head when I read the novel) include his frantic major in The Dawn Patrol and his many swashbuckling, snarling villains, both deadly serious in those wonderful Errol Flynn adventures and firmly tongue-in-cheek as in the smashing The Court Jester.

He is one of those actors I will watch in anything.

Thank you, gen! Nice to meet you too! Yes, Gisbourne and Karenin are both terrific performances! I have yet to see Confession, but probably will soon. It's great knowing I'm not the only classics fan out there! I love the '30's and '40's as well!

And thank you, too, rudely! It's nice to meet you! I love his major in Dawn Patrol as well, and as much as I like his swashbuckling roles, I wish there was one where he lived to see the end of the movie. Though it's funny that the one on-screen duel he did win was with John Barrymore in Romeo and Juliet...

Welcome to TMDB. relaxed

How would you compare Jeremy Brett to Sir Basil Rathbone?

Side note:

Here's a list of movies suggested by others on TMDB.

Perhaps you have some of your own you'd like to add to the list.

@rudely, I completely agree with you about Mr. Rathbone's Karenin being pretty much definitive.

@barry, you'll enjoy Confession when you see it. Mr. Rathbone portrays a womanizing pianist in that movie. The film co-stars Kay Francis, who's one of my favourite actresses.

@wonder, both Rathbone and Brett were superb and wonderful Sherlock Holmeses - though my vote for best Holmes goes to Brett. IMO something about Brett's characterization is the most fully informed and developed and "clicks" especially satisfyingly. (I should mention that I've never read a Sherlock Holmes story, therefore don't actually know which actor's characterization is most in keeping with Holmes as described and presented on the printed page.)

wonder, regarding your excellent thread (link above), I hope some of the folks on that thread will actually post on the boards for some (at least a few) of the listed movies. For some reason so far no one on that thread - yourself and I excepted - seems inclined to want to "take the leap" and actually have discussions anywhere on TMDb other than strictly amongst their own usual selves on the same usual two or so specific t.v. series boards. Perhaps that'll start changing any day now. relaxed

OT.

That's true. I've noticed that there are some discussions about movies, but usually off-topic in another post, not on the specific Movie Discussion Boards.

Users seem to be more comfortable staying on their 'own' board, e.g. "Beyoncé Knowles", "Henry Cavill", "General Hospital", "Star Trek", "Broadchurch", "Mission Impossible".

They'll go off-topic in a thread, talking about a movie they've seen, or reply immediately in that same thread. Taking the extra step - 'type and search' - by going to that specific board, is one bridge too far. I try to help by providing as many links as possible when I go off-topic myself and I'll suggest to continue the discussion there by clicking the link.

All in all I accept the situation as it is and I'll hang out here, playing a game, reading or posting something, whenever I feel like it. relaxed

I've noticed you multiple times have encouraged (each time very nicely and patiently) the various ST regulars "you can post about it directly on that board" - and it each time goes straight in one ear and out the other - certain ones of them then just responding by informing you of more titles to list (clearly that not being the actual main point you've been trying to make to them - which they probably realize). I've made a point to not say much there since I'm not part of the ST group (I simply happened to cross paths the other week during a tumultuous situation transpiring at the time).

PS: Apologies, barry, about our brief bit of non-Rathbone TMDb shop talk (constructively intended). innocent

Well, back on topic.

@genplant29 Thanks for answering my question "How would you compare Jeremy Brett to Sir Basil Rathbone?".

What do the others on this thread think?

@genplant29 Oh, no problem. I don't mind. wink Besides, I'm still getting the hang of everything on here, so you both talking about that other stuff is actually helpful to me. Oh, and I like Kay Francis too!

@wonder2wonder And thank you! I think that Brett and Rathbone both played an excellent Sherlock Holmes, and of course I've very fond of Rathbone's performance, but I agree that Brett's Holmes was more developed and eccentric--more in keeping with the Holmes that Sir Conan Doyle created. Though I must admit, I also liked Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes. I've liked him since I was really little. (And I speak as someone who's read literally every Holmes story Doyle wrote, as well as some that others wrote.)

@ barry: rudely, wonder, and I each wound up here (separately) as part of the huge wave of exiles when the IMDb message boards closed back in mid-Feb. 2017. Thus we're veteran TMDb message boarders who've been here since this site's Movie/TV/People boards were, initially, all entirely empty. (Thank goodness that's no longer the case.)

Please post away on the boards for movies, shows, and actors/actresses, etc. that you like, or that you have anything you want to express/comment something about. No doubt we'll be crossing paths. Where old movies and their performers are concerned, I primarily focus on the '20s, '30s (particularly Pre-Code years thereof), and first half of the '40s, but with some significant drift, here and there, into the beginning of the '50s.

@genplant29: Oh wow, I didn't know IMDb used to have message boards. That's too bad they closed them. Anyway, that is really cool, and I'm definitely going to post more. I'm sure we will be crossing paths again, and thanks!

I'm presently working on compiling a list of actors, actresses and other famous people whom I've created TMDb People-category threads about during the last 2-1/2 years. Hopefully the list - which I'll soon be attaching to my existing Movies, Miniseries, TV Series, Documentaries, & Specials I've Created Discussions For list - will render those threads readily findable (which they're currently not due to being so decidedly "out of sight, out of mind" and spread across TMDb, not to mention most are about individuals of Hollywood's "Golden Age" of cinema, otherwise performers in Silent films, who are today in nearly all cases long deceased, therefore not exactly prime in public consciousness). Hopefully the expanded list will serve as an effective (to at least some extent) way to consolidate a lot of stuff that, in large part, somewhat "goes" together.

Yes, that sounds great! It's really cool that you're doing all that, and you're so right about how most people from that era aren't as well-known today. I think it's rather sad, in a way. But it's nice to know there are others such as yourself who still have interests in the Golden Age. I will most certainly check out your list at some point!
