Valéry Inkijinoff (Russian: Валерьян (Валерий) Иванович Инкижинов; 25 March 1895 – 26 September 1973) was a French actor of Russian-Buryat origin. His strong facial features made him a favourite villain of French cinema for exotic adventure films and crime movies.

Inkijinoff was born to a Christian Buryat father and a Russian mother in Irkutsk gubernia.

He studied at the Polytechnical Institute of Saint Petersburg and was for a time one of the resident actors of an imperial theater of this city. At the beginning of his career in Russia, he appeared first as stuntman in a few movies and then as director and as actor. His major lead role during the Russian part of his career is The Son in Storm Over Asia by Vsevolod Pudovkin in 1928, a major Soviet propaganda film about a fictional British consolidation of Mongolia.

He was also an actor in the troop of Vsevolod Meyerhold and was then appointed as director of the movie and theater school of Kiev in Ukraine.

In 1930, while in France on a European tour, he refused to return to the USSR. According to Boris Shumyatsky, after Stalin learned Inkijinoff had never returned in 1934, said: "Too bad that the man escaped. Now he, probably, is dying to come back but, alas, too late." He starred in 2 movies while living in the Soviet Union, and contrary to Stalin's assumption, Inkijinoff became immensely popular in Europe, arguably the most successful Soviet actor abroad, starring in a total of 44 French, British, German, and Italian films.

In France he frequently played the part of Asian villains. His most active period was in the thirties, when he appeared in Les Bateliers de la Volga and the G. W. Pabst film Le drame de Shanghai. He played for Fritz Lang in 1959, in Der Tiger von Eschnapur and its sequel Das indische Grabmal, in which he played the role of the high priest Yama. In 1965, Philippe de Broca cast him as Monsieur Goh, the wise but scary Chinese who guarantees to the Jean-Paul Belmondo character a certain death in Les tribulations d'un Chinois en Chine.

His last movie was with Brigitte Bardot and Claudia Cardinale, where he played the role of Indian chief Spitting Bull in Les pétroleuses.

He was a great friend of Charles Dullin and Louis Jouvet, and had a long career in French theater, appearing for instance in Marie Galante by Jacques Deval.

He died at his home in Brunoy, Essonne, France, aged 78.

Valery Inkijinoff (en russe : Валерий Иванович Инкижинов, Valeri Ivanovitch Inkijinov), né le 25 mars 1895 à Bokhan près d'Irkoutsk (Sibérie), sur les bords du lac Baïkal, et mort le 26 septembre 1973 à Brunoy dans l'Essonne, est un acteur bouriate de Russie, émigré en France.

Son père était instituteur, et s'efforça de lui offrir de bonnes études. Il apprendra par exemple la langue française, ce qui lui sera utile plus tard, quand il partira pour la France. En 1915, il entre à l'Institut polytechnique de Petrograd. Mais, passionné de théâtre, il fréquente parallèlement le studio de Vsevolod Meyerhold, avec qui il fondera la théorie de la biomécanique théâtrale. Il le suivra à Moscou en 1920 et jouera dans son théâtre. Avec Sergueï Eisenstein, il l'assiste dans La Mort de Tarelkine (d'après Aleksandre Soukhovo-Kobyline). Il étudie ensuite auprès de Lev Koulechov, qui tente de le convaincre de se consacrer entièrement au cinéma. De 1925 à 1930, il est metteur en scène titulaire des studios cinématographiques Proletkino, Sovkino, Vostokkino. En 1931, dans le but d'étudier le cinéma parlant, il se rend en France, où il rencontre de nombreux anciens collègues émigrés, notamment Alexandre Kouprine. Les nouvelles alarmantes du pays l'incitent à ne pas y retourner.

Il sera ensuite très remarqué dans le film de Julien DuvivierLa tête d'un homme, qui sortira en 1932, et ou il tiendra la vedette avec l'acteur Harry Baur. Sa prestation sera saluée par la critique, et le film deviendra un classique du film polar français, en lançant la série consacrée aux enquêtes du commissaire Maigret.

Pendant la guerre, ses origines lui font subir un ostracisme qui lui ferme les studios de cinéma. Il ne retrouve des rôles au cinéma qu’après la guerre. Mais Valery Inkijinoff se consacre alors surtout au théâtre, et au cinéma ses participations se limitent à de rares seconds rôles, et surtout à de petits rôles.

Il tentera d'aller voir sa famille en URSS à partir des années 1960, avec la politique d'ouverture de Khroutchev, mais finalement, il renoncera, jugeant que les conditions n'étaient pas réunies pour ce voyage.

Il est inhumé au cimetière russe de Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois.

В 1920 году переехал в Москву, учился в мастерской Льва Кулешова, работал в театре Мейерхольда, был его ассистентом на постановке спектакля «Смерть Тарелкина». В 1925 году исполнив небольшую роль в фильме Кулешова «Весёлая канарейка», готовился к съёмкам фильма «Базар похоти» по сценарию Тараса Немчинова (то есть Григория Александрова и Сергея Эйзенштейна). По ряду причин фильм не был реализован. Работал режиссером на студии «Пролеткино». В последующие годы снял в качестве режиссёра три фильма - «Расплата» (1926), «Вор» (1927), «Комета» (1929), которые не сохранились. В 1928 году исполнил главную роль в фильме Всеволода Пудовкина «Потомок Чингисхана», который принёс ему всемирную известность. В 1930 году отказался возвращаться в СССР из Парижа, став «невозвращенецем».
