开朗活泼、为别人着想的女孩子加贺美厚子受到了周围人的喜爱，大家都亲切地叫她“小甜甜”。某一天，厚子把化妆盒上心爱的镜子打碎了，于是她便把化妆盒埋了起来并做了一个墓碑。当天晚上，镜子精灵出现在她的面前，感谢她如此珍视自己，并送给她一个可以变身为任何人的魔法化妆盒。厚子使用镜子的力量变身成魔法少女，帮助了自己的好朋友元子和她的弟弟勘吉以及大将、少将等人，解决了很多骚动。

Atsuko Kagami is an elementary school girl who has an affinity for mirrors. One day, her favorite mirror which was given to Akko by her mother is broken, and she prefers to bury it in her yard rather than throw it to the trash can. In her dreams, she is contacted by a spirit (or in some cases the Queen of the Mirror Kingdom) who is touched that the girl would treat the mirror so respectfully and not simply throw it away. Akko-chan is then given the gift of a magical mirror and taught enchantments, such as "Tekumaku mayakon, tekumaku mayakon" and "Lamipasu lamipasu lu lu lu lu lu", that will allow her to transform into anything she wishes

La protagonista, chiamata Stilly Kagami (Atsuko "Akko-chan" in originale), è un'energica ragazzina delle elementari, con ottimi voti a scuola, molto diligente e sempre circondata da amici. Ha i capelli castani, indossa un abitino composto da una gonna bianca, una camicetta a maniche corte, una giacca rossa e calzini bianchi. Stilly ha una speciale predilezione per gli specchi, su cui ama rimirarsi. Un giorno il suo specchio favorito, che le era stato regalato dalla madre (in alcune versioni da suo padre, di ritorno da un viaggio in India), si rompe e la ragazza preferisce seppellirne in giardino i frammenti, anziché gettarli nella spazzatura. Quella notte stessa, lo Spirito degli Specchi ne vuole premiare il buon cuore (per aver trattato lo specchio in modo rispettoso e non semplicemente buttandolo via) e, apparsole in sogno, le dona uno specchietto dai poteri magici, lo "Specchio Magico", che ha la capacità di trasformare con un incantesimo Stilly in qualsiasi cosa ella desideri.
