守护山林二十年的两名森林公安在任务中与偷猎团伙进行殊死搏杀，一名牺牲，另一名身负重伤，偷猎者下落不明。五年后，魏疆从森林公安局离开，选择做一名护林员继续守护森林。新兵秦川来到保护区，机缘巧合下魏疆成了秦川的老师，因伤病提前退伍的魏疆并未停下脚步，他带领秦川踏上了巡逻之路。在熟悉环境的过程中两人结识了当地年轻的自然保护区兽医叶小婉，热心的动物保护组织领袖赛娜等人，不料半路意外发现了偷猎者的踪迹，遂决定与其誓死周旋。穷凶极恶的偷猎团伙、嗜血凶残的狼群，两人数次徘徊在生死边缘，却依然无畏前行；质朴的牧民、善良的背包客，萍水相逢的善意一次又一次地温暖着他们绝望的心；当偷猎者终被伏法，向往广袤世界的新兵亦从老兵的身上学到了何谓使命，何谓传承。

At the Northern part of Xinjiang, two policemen were killed by a group of poachers and the prey were nowhere to be found. Five years later, Wei Jiang left the the police station in the forest, and chose to become a protector of the borders. By chance, he becomes Qin Chuan's teacher, and leads him on the path of patrolling. They meet the local vet Ye Xiao Wan, as well as leader of the animal activist group Sai Na. Together, they found the traces of the poachers, and began a fierce battle with them. Finally, the poachers were caught, and justice was served.

Na parte norte de Xinjiang, dois policiais foram mortos por um grupo de caçadores ilegais e a presa não foi encontrada em lugar nenhum.

Cinco anos depois, Wei Jiang deixou a delegacia de polícia na floresta e optou por se tornar um protetor das fronteiras. Por acaso, ele se torna o professor de Qin Chuan e o conduz no caminho do patrulhamento. Eles conhecem o veterinário local Ye Xiao Wan, bem como o líder do grupo de ativistas pelos animais Sai Na. Juntos, eles encontraram os vestígios dos caçadores furtivos e começaram uma batalha feroz com eles. Finalmente, os caçadores furtivos foram capturados e a justiça foi feita.
