丽佳（菅野美穗饰）出生时在母亲百合子（川岛直美饰）眼中是一只蜥蜴的形象，百合子因此十分厌恶丽佳，不久次女麻美（榎本加奈子饰）诞生，百合子便将所有的宠爱都给了麻美，而百般针对丽佳。

百合子生日时丽佳用尽自己的储蓄买了一条丝巾送给妈妈，却遭到责骂，伤心的丽佳投河自尽，恰好被路过的冈崎升（冈田义德饰）救起。丽佳惊恐地发现，自己在镜子中是蜥蜴的形象！从那天起，理佳把内心封闭起来，变得沉默寡言。

自己是个“怪物”的意识无时无刻不影响着丽佳，长大后，面对爱情和未来，丽佳始终无法想信自己能够获得幸福……

Iguana Girl is a manga by Moto Hagio published in Petit Flower. It was adapted into a television drama in 1996.

It is about a young girl, Rika, whose mother views her as being ugly, and favours her other daughter, Mami. Rika thinks of herself as ugly and as an iguana, but after her mother's death, realises that her mother was also an ugly iguana.

Iguana Girl reflects Hagio's own relationship with her mother, and it took her "years to write this story". Hagio saw an iguana in a documentary on television and identified with it, feeling it was "lamenting its failure to become a human, just like me".

Rika est une jeune lycéenne qui manque de confiance en elle.

Elle n'a jamais reçu le moindre signe d'affection de la part de sa mère puisque lorsque celle-ci pose les yeux sur Rika, elle voit en réalité un iguane. De ce fait, c'est la sœur cadette, Mami, qui obtient toute l'attention de leur mère.

Mais Rika ne se laisse pas abattre puisqu'elle est entourée de Mikami Nobuko, qui vient de devenir sa meilleure amie, mais aussi de Noboru qui est le garçon qu'elle aime malgré le fait qu'une autre fille lui tourne autour...
