When the first few eps of the show were actually filmed in Georgia, Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane seemed to be a murderous, deadly avenging angel of a lawman. I think this cruelty in the role led them to try to recast the Hazzard County Sheriff part. This was a shame as James Best was mega-great as Roscoe from the get go. When they intelligently brought him back to the show I believe Roscoe was way more toned down and now believed in the tooth fairy! I remember reading one review of DOH DVD Season 1 at amazon that was entitled "Roscoe before he got all weird".
