Discuss The Leftovers

When/at what point did you conclude/suspect that Laurie was planning to “give up the ghost”?

For me it was when she had been sitting on the steps talking with Kevin, got up to leave, and he tried to give Jill’s lighter back to her. She said something on the order of: “you keep it, I quit”. Just the way she said “I quit” had me thinking MAYBE.

After she had rummage through the sewer to reclaim it, and fought Nora as hard as she did to get it back, just didn’t seem likely that she would so casually give it away…not even to Kevin.

NOTE the way she tells him she QUIT SMOKING right after she's also SMOKED one of NORA's cigarettes with him.

Imo, it's pretty clear she wanted him to have the lighter for the same reason as JILL wanted her to have it.

Because Jill wanted it to REMIND her mother not to FORGET HER.

And Laurie also wants KEVIN to REMEMBER not to forget his daughter either.

Because letting himself be KILLED would also HURT her again the same way as she was when her mother joined the other CULT.

And KEVIN'S choosing to let still another CULT control him the same way as Laurie previously let PATTI and the GR control her.

So she's also hoping the lighter will REMIND him of how he's now doing the same thing LAURIE did before ... back when she handed over control of her life to others who were OUT of their MINDS and full of BS ... just like the case seems to be with KEV SR and Grace.

Laurie's not giving up the GHOST.

She's NOT being HAUNTED by people from the GR anymore the way she was last season.

GIVING up the GHOST is KEVIN'S JOB.

Because he's still being HAUNTED by the image of EVIE (who's DEATH he chose to COVER UP this season the same way as he did PATTI'S last season).

Give up the ghost - An expression that means: To cease living or functioning; die.

Also, my question wasn't about Kevin, or about what Laurie did, or did not, want for Kevin.

The question I asked is when...in this episode...did YOU know or suspect or have an inkling that Laurie was going to kill herself.

Yes I know what GIVE UP the GHOST means ...

but didn't we also already PROVE that LAURIE isn't going to KILL HERSELF due to the EASTER EGG VIDEO REVIEW where the person who did it SHOWS US the HAPPY SMILE LAURIE has on her face before she goes SCUBA DIVING?

And wasn't it also already pointed out how YOUNG Jill and TOM sound in that scene.

For all we know that wasn't even a recent scene but could have been a FLASHBACK of another MEMORY from her past.

Because the show has also been good at MIXING UP TIME LINES on us so that we can't be sure what comes first or is a FLASHBACK or a FLASHFORWARD (like when we see NORA/SARA).

All we know is LAURIE told KEVIN she couldn't be there when they try to kill him.

But that also doesn't mean she plans to let them kill him without doing something to STOP it from happening.

Anyhow, the ANSWER is I'VE NEVER SUSPECTED or had an INKLING that she's going to KILL HERSELF.

Because I still think the SCUBA DIVING is a METAPHOR for DIVING DOWN into the MIND of KEVIN as a way to HELP HEAL whatever it is that's wrong with him.

WHY was he taking all of those MEDS he FLUSHED down the TOLIET???

HOW did he get them?

WHY didn't we ever see him visiting a DOCTOR?

Doesn't that also seem to indicate LAURIE must have been the one who wrote the prescriptions for him prior to her joining the GR?

Just because NORA made an OFF the WALL RUDE REMARK to LAURIE about how she could kill herself doesn't mean she'll do it.

Young!? Didn't see anything about anyone commenting on Jill and Tommy sounding young. Even so, I doubt it...Jill dropped enough "F" bombs to send a shipload of sailors scurrying for cover! There was NOTHING young-sounding about that!

Also, she asked Laurie about Kevin and Nora being in Australia...so that pretty much blows that young-theory out the water.

But, you did answer my question...so thanks for that.

The comment about how YOUNG JILL sounds was made over on the other topic.

Do you remember how YOUNG and GOOFY she sounds in MEET the GARVEY'S?

She walks around with the HEAD PHONES on all the time (like KEVIN does in S2 as a way to drown out what PATTI says to him).

But in JILL'S case maybe she wears the head phones because she wants to DROWN OUT the way her parents don't get along?

Whatever the case may be, during that phone call **JILL sounds GOOFY **like she did when she's still back in HIGH SCHOOL and NOT like someone does who's attending COLLEGE.

Are you sure she asked about Kevin and Nora during the phone call before she goes SCUBA DIVING?

Need to go back and check that out.

And you sound like someone who doesn't even watch the show. TOO, TOO MANY FACTUAL ERRORS - AND TOO, TOO MANY HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE COMMENTS!

To me, when she said she quit, not taking the lighter back is when I felt she was given in to die. Don't care if I'm wrong, but I don't think she's coming up from Scuba alive. Not sure if we see her when Kev goes under or not. From her interview outside of the show, it seems pretty clear she's dead. But this show is testing my logical predictions, LOL

Don't know either...expect we will (but, DL is all about doing the unexpected)...hope so anyway. Kevin said he wanted her to be happy; maybe in seeing her he'll know she found there what she couldn't find in-her-other-life.

I got suspicious when Laurie had a significant look on her face after Nora's scuba suicide story. Still, though, I was surprised to see that end scene.

Part of me hoped that she was just going underwater to swim out the big flood. heh. Should have thrown in random caps in that sentence.

Well…

Didn’t I FLUB that one?

Good thing I’m not a betting person…I would have been out of some money.

I thought everything about her body language, demeanor, actions and words toward the end pointed to her deciding to pack it in; especially considering the opening sequence of the episode… but I was oh so wrong.

I want to say that DL led us to water; but wouldn’t let us drink...but, it’s probably more about ME; that is, reading more into things than was actually there.

On the bright side, it's one of the times I don't mind being wrong. smiley
