My ultimate opinion of the episode was....IT WAS SO GOOD! Not only did they make an episode that could take a good break from the drama of BOTH shows, but manage to stay canon in the process. There are a few key points I want to criticise.
1) The Music -I knew that there were a lot of characters, heroes included, with actors who had some singing talent. Specifically, I knew Joe, Barry, Cisco and Caitlin had chops. However, I was SHOCKED to see Kara, Winn and Merlyn involved in this as well. Never the less, I was smiling BIG TIME through every number that played. They were light hearted, sounded good, and they were so silly in a good way. I had a feeling all the actors busted out their throat perfume when they heard the word "musical" pop up.
My only complaint is that they didnt have J'onn in it. I know it wouldn't have matched but you have to admit that seeing the MArtian Manhunter singing and dancing would have been a RIOT.
2) The Romance plots -When I saw the promo, I thought this episode would would just be a good distraction from all the drama of the season. When I saw that it would be a crossover with Supergirl, I figured I'd be getting two distractions for the price of one. I was not optimistic enough to expect them to fix the issues between Barry/Iris or Kara/Mon-El in one episode, especially with a few musical numbers. BOY was I surprised. Not only did they manage to resolve them, they manage to do it in a way that didnt seem heavy handed or rushed.
Through the fake movie plot, Barry finally realized that Iris was a brave young woman willing to face whatever danger and she wasnt just Barry's pet "damsel in distress." Kara finally tapped into that oh-so important quality an All-Loving Hero should have: empathy. She had every right to be mad/hurt about Mon-El lying to her, but she should have also remembered M'gann's situation and how she kept going on about Daxamites in front of him. She realized that he didnt lie to hurt her, but because he was scared she would hurt him. Hopefully thisll help in their relationship and they will BOTH try harder to consider each others feelings.
3) The Music Meister -At first I was a bit disappointed with how they made MM. My first thought was "They could portray Mxy's reality warping perfectly, but they couldn't have made this guys powers right!" After thinking about it, it made sense. To recreate his powers from Brave and the Bold, it probably would have taken them more choreography, dancers, special effects and rehearsal than they had the time/money for. The version they gave was pretty good overall, even if they made his powers more stacked and complicated than before. When he answered what he was, I instantly exclaimed "you were just the writers excuse to whip up a musical.
My only complaint was for the addition of Joe and Stein being a gay couple. Not because of homophobia, but because it seemed unlikely. -They never struck me as having chemistry -They were in a time period that, I thought, would see a homosexual in the morgue before they become a crime boss.
