The people who made Airplane also made The Naked Gun films. Those were three American crime comedy films based on their earlier short-lived ABC television series Police Squad!, which was cancelled after six episodes.

Police Squad was cancelled because it was aired opposite a juggernaut called Magnum P.I. Police Squad was replaced with a sketch comedy show that was far less funny and also didn't last more than a few episodes.
