Shortly after Picard is diagnosed with a long-term, potentially debilitating brain disorder, he starts experiencing bizarre shifts into three main time periods: 25 years into the future, a few days before the Enterprise-D is sent on its mission to Farpoint station, and the present. Picard realizes that Q is behind these shifts through time.

After his encounter with Q, Picard assembles the senior staff, and wonders if Q is actually giving him a chance to save humanity by showing him that the spatial anomaly also exists in the past. As they talk, the ship reaches the Neutral Zone, then Picard returns to the future, where Beverly's ship is also on the edge of the Neutral Zone. He convinces a reluctant Worf to accompany the group into Klingon territory, and then travels to the past, where he orders the crew into the Devron system.

L'esprit de Picard se retrouve baladé entre trois trames temporelles qui se déroulent en parallèle : l'une à l'époque où il prend le commandement de l'Entreprise, l'une au temps présent, l'une vingt-cinq ans dans le futur. En même temps il est diagnostiqué d'une maladie incurable de dégénérescence mentale. Il finit par comprendre que Q est responsable de ses sauts dans le temps, et ce dernier lui indique que l'humanité est à nouveau en procès et menacée de destruction.

Picard essaie de déterminer, puis déjouer, les plans que les membres du continuum Q ont prévus pour l'humanité. Dans chacune des trois trames, il parvient à amener son vaisseau en un point de l'espace où se trouve la source du mystère.

Troi und Worf begegnen auf der Enterprise einem verwirrt wirkenden Picard, der behauptet, er würde vorwärts und rückwärts in der Zeit springen. Er bittet Dr. Crusher, ihn auf Anzeichen des iromodischen Syndroms zu untersuchen, der Krankheit, an der er, wie er in der Zukunft erfährt, als alter Mann leiden wird. Beverly findet zwar keine Anzeichen der Krankheit, stellt bei Picard aber die Veranlagung dafür fest. Kurz darauf trifft eine Nachricht von Admiral Nakamura ein. Er berichtet, daß die Romulaner 30 Warbirds an der neutralen Zone zusammengezogen hätten, und dass es eine räumliche Anomalie im Devron-System innerhalb der Zone geben würde, die damit in Zusammenhang stehen könnte. Die Enterprise wird zusammen mit einigen anderen Schiffen dorthin beordert.
