L'idea è di dedicarsi al lavoro, un progetto fotografico per Felix e gli ultimi ritocchi a un romanzo per Leon, ma la quiete in casa è turbata da Nadja, presenza sfuggente percepita attraverso gli incontri amorosi e notturni, il cibo sulla tavola e la silhouette in bicicletta. Mentre il caldo inaridisce l'aria e gli incendi mangiano l'entroterra, Leon fatica ad accettare la leggerezza che lo circonda e si ritrova sempre più chiuso nella sua mente

Le truppe tedesche avanzano verso Parigi. Georg, rifugiato tedesco, scappa via e raggiunge Marsiglia, portando con sé i documenti dello scrittore Weidel, suicidatosi qualche tempo prima: lettere manoscritte e un visto per il Messico. Del resto, all'orizzonte appare Christoph, di cui non può fare a meno che innamorarsi. Il loro è un amore felice, diverso e basato sulla fiducia reciproca. Undine lo segue nelle sue immersioni in un bacino idrico ma Christoph ben presto sente come lei gli nasconda qualcosa. Ancora una volta, sarà l'antica maledizione a rompere l'incantesimo.
