Als er das Leben von Captain John Winter (Michael Rennie) retten kann, wird er von diesem ausgewählt, ihn auf der nächsten Expedition zu begleiten, doch seine Unerfahrenheit und sein riskantes Vorgehen bringen alle in Gefahr...
Die Erstbesteigung des Matterhorns erfolgte am 14. Juli 1865 durch Edward Whymper, Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson, Douglas Hadow, Michel Croz und zwei Bergführer aus Zermatt, Vater und Sohn Peter Taugwalder. Douglas, Hudson, Hadow und Croz werden beim Abstieg getötet, nachdem Hadow ausrutscht und die anderen drei Männer die Nordwand hinunterzieht. Anschließend wird Whymper und den beiden überlebenden Taugwaldern vorgeworfen, das Seil durchtrennt zu haben, das sie an den Rest der Gruppe fesselte, um nicht in den Sturz hineingezogen zu werden. Spätere Ermittlungen finden jedoch keinen Beweis für ihre Schuld und sie werden freigesprochen. . . . Das Matterhorn war der letzte große Gipfel der Alpen, der bestiegen wurde, und seine Besteigung markierte das Ende des goldenen Zeitalters des Bergsteigens. Struggle for the Matterhorn (German: Der Kampf ums Matterhorn) is a 1928 German-Swiss silent drama film co-directed by Mario Bonnard and Nunzio Malasomma and starring Luis Trenker, Marcella Albani, and Alexandra Schmitt. The film is part of the popular cycle of mountain films of the 1920s and 1930s. Art direction was by Heinrich Richter. Based on a novel by Carl Haensel, the film depicts the battle between British and Italian climbers to be the first to climb the Matterhorn. Trenker later remade the film as The Challenge in 1938.

In 1953, in an old cabinet of a former photographer from Zermatt, a first mountaineering film was found. It was a silent film from the first era showing the ascent of the Matterhorn by a group of guides across the Hornli ridge. The film is attributed to the American Frederick Burlingham and dated 1901 and is therefore the first mountaineering film in history. The story of the discovery was also dressed in a certain aura of legend and mystery as it was told that the original copy of the film had been lost forever in a shipwreck in the Atlantic and was the only copy printed that remained. The film was renamed Cervin 1901 or Cervino 1901, and in 2014, after being restored again. But the truth is that this whole story, which has somehow held together throughout this period, is full of inaccuracies...
The first filmed winter ascent of the north face of the Matterhorn. To set the scene, the tragic story of Edward Whymper's first ascent is skillfully pieced together. The modern expedition, a team of three British climbers, is also plagued with epics: Eric Jones is hit by an avalanche and can only come to a dangerous stop at the edge of a 1000 foot drop. Then the worst storm ever recorded in Zermatt hits the Matterhorn. With time and weather against them, the team is forced to climb in the dark as thunderstorms rumble around them. This adventure captures the skill and courage of the climbers, their agony and tension, and the beauty of the assault on this spectacular mountain.
