Discuss The Ballad of Narayama

What a beautiful film to watch, the way scenes fade into the next, the vivid back lighting and wonderfully painted back drops all help to tell you one very strange tale. High marks!!

Just watched this. LOVED IT. But wow... heavy stuff... I might need a few hours to recover.

Totally agree that the vivid set & lighting, along with the kabuki style storytelling, made it very strange. But I think that's what gave it such a powerful mythical feel. At the same time, the bookends (the narrator's introduction in front of the curtain & the ending's jarring image at the train) are meant to put it in a very real-world context, as if the director is blatantly accusing modern society of doing that exact thing. Like I said, heavy stuff. But what a brilliant film.

Going to watch over the weekend.
