Discuss The Ballad of Narayama

Shot entirely on a soundstage, purposely artificial, as if the filmmakers want to constantly remind us that this is a fable. But at the same time the sets are so enormous and detailed that we get lost in the 'reality' just the same. Other films that take this approach?

I can't think of many, but all of them are amazing

Kwaidan (1964)

City of Lost Children (1995)

Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)

Metropolis (1927)

and I think there was a Jerry Lewis movie (The Ladies Man?) that was shot entirely on an enormous 7 story open-sided 'doll house'. Need to watch that one again.
