De jonge kunstenaar Simon Durand bevindt zich toevallig in een idyllisch dorpje. Hier vindt hij kost en inwoning bij Marietta, die alleen woont met haar zieke moeder, en al snel heeft Durand het hart van zijn jonge gastvrouw veroverd. Hun gelukkige toestand wordt bedreigd door de rijke boer Jerome, die Marietta al lange tijd tevergeefs het hof maakt en niet van plan is zijn hoop om uiteindelijk met haar te trouwen op te geven. Hij kletst over het echtpaar met de moeder van Marietta, die onmiddellijk een hartaanval krijgt en sterft bij de gedachte alleen al aan een arme schilder als haar schoonzoon.
