Which parts of the film was he in? I saw it ages ago, and I hardly remember him.

In the book, he wasn't Esmeralda's father, yes he was a beggar. He was killed in the big battle Hugo had at the end to get rid of all his extra characters.
And he was in the habit of pretending to be crippled to get money. And he was braver than most of the other theives. But he was pretty old.
