This still seems to be causing an issue and I’m really not sure why. Why is it not taking the earlier release date as the year the film is from?

It’s dependent on the release date types https://www.themoviedb.org/bible/movie/59f3b16d9251414f20000009 A theatrical release date will take precedence over a premiere date. That’s why the France date is determining the year.

Thanks for the reply. That seems a strange way to me as most places tend to classify a film by the date it was first shown, rather than last. Based off the info on IMDb (which seems to take the 1969 date) that French release date is wrong anyway as it has the French theatrical release date as 1971.
