How do you make a movie, in 2014, for $200,000?

I mean, even if every cast member is paid points on gross, what about equipment, key grips, set design...?

Well, it made over 17 million, using your calculations, what was the payoff?

:-)

It paid a very shrewd $89.17, one of only 28 titles to pay better than $80 putting it in the top 1% in my movie ROI database now at 2800 titles from 1924 to 2022. And that's the thing - revenues of $17M in a year in which 66 titles averaged $264M in revenue is way low, so the producers knew they had to get into the can with a really low budget for any chance to make money. The average budget that year was $64M, so, even if they came in under a 3rd of that, ~$20M, they'd have lost money. I haven't seen the movie to get any sense of the quality of the screenplay, but regardless, I'm blown away they could do it at that amount.

Most of the reviews I read weren't very good. I haven't seen it myself but I'm not a fan of modern horror films.

I was hoping to find an article that might explain how they made it so cheaply but most of the outside links at the bottom return a page not found.
