I have always been a little confused about this. Kevin, Treece's friend, fights with an intruder most likely sent by Henri Cloche and dies during the fight. He's later found by Treece. In another room of the house there appears to be another man slumped in the corner. I can only surmise that it was the intruder. Treece is holding a shotgun but no shots were heard. Could be a deleted scene though.
