Discuss Chasing Amy

That scene where Alyssa is with her lesbian friends and they all have this look on their faces like they just heard a friend died when she announces she is in love with a man pisses me off. I don't mind lesbians but I can't stand the man-hating variety. As though it is impossible for her to be happy with a man. And saying, "Another one bites the dust" as though there is a mission to keep as many women strictly lesbian as possible. Fücking ridiculous.

Yeah. Even I was pissed of that scene but I think that Director wants to show how homophobes behave from lesbians perspective. Currently, we as a society are opening our doors to homosexual people and accepting them and giving them rights. But, If you look at the time period of the movie (1997), I dont think that society at that time was easy on gay ppl. I think that the situation was similar to racisim on black ppl. So, only those ppl formed a group and when her friend was attracted to the opposite gender they thought that she was revolting against their life style and may be she will also hate her.

I don't think so. I think it is simply gang mentality. You see it happen everywhere from sports teams to politics. I'm glad Smith included this scene because it illustrates how even the oppressed can get lost in their struggle and begin to do EXACTLY why they bonded and wanted to stand up against. You see it happening a lot lately. Ultra Left groups who want to stand for liberal ideals are now physically attacking people simply for their speech. Also the same feminist groups who want empowerment of women attacking people for criticizing Islamic fundamentals calling them "Islamophobes" when it cannot be denied Islam treats women like cattle.
