Ken Russell's delightful musical largely avoids the grotesque that characterises so much of his work, both good and bad, but does have its fair share of weirdness in the elaborate and varied fantasy sequences. While most of the songs are rather forgettable, the story and performances are engaging, the sets and costumes dazzling and the whole a thoroughly enjoyable, if slightly overlong, tribute to the Busby Berkeley classics of the 1930s.
