Lori je bezpečnostní inspektorka ve velké těžařské společnosti. Její pracovní nasazení je pro ni únikem z neutěšeného osobního života. Lori and John Wilson, employees of an emergency response center, must find a way to survive the initial lava storms, to save John's father and their two teenage children. Even more importantly, they must find a way to slow the path of the lava storms, to give humankind the time to find a solution to this natural disaster, in order to save humanity and our Earth.

Lori et John sont secouristes dans une petite ville tranquille, mais Lori aspire à des missions plus ambitieuses et son couple est en pleine crise. Leurs enfants, Ian et Emma, retrouvent deux de leurs amis morts alors qu'ils avaient rendez-vous dans une mine désaffectée. Pensant que la grotte située sous la mine est envahie de gaz nocifs, ils alertent immédiatement leurs parents.
