电影的故事背景设置在日本强占时期1932年的首尔，日本美术留学归来的本雄（金秀哲饰）在归国展示会当中结识了青年诗人李箱（金甲洙饰），对他非常欣赏，此后便开始提携照顾李箱，为他作出很多牺牲并且放弃了自己的爱情。患有慢性结核的李箱来到本雄为他提供的疗养处养病，在这里他结识了妓生锦红（李知恩饰）并且渐渐不能自拔，过着放纵的生活。尽管锦红神奇的魅力让本雄也深深着迷，但是在李箱和金红之间他根本无法作出选择。之后因为诗歌“乌瞰图”的缘故，李箱遇到了文学创作上的危机，而同时红也和他剧烈争执后分开。为了帮助日益消沉的朋友，本雄前去寻找锦红，但是她却不肯回来。最终从未忘记过锦红的本雄带着死去李箱的遗物再次寻找锦红……

The story takes place during the period of Japanese Imperialism in Korea. It tells the tale of the life and loves of one peculiar poet. In 1932, Bon-wwong returned from studying fine arts in Japan. He is known as a painter of the Fauvism school of the Art. At the first successful exhibition of his works, he meets a young man, Lee Sang, a poet with really queer character. Soon Lee Sang and Bon-woong become close friends, and they meet almost every day and enjoy all kinds of interesting and usual events. Lee Sang goes to visit Bakchon (a health resort) for medical treatment. Bon-woong follow him. At Bakchon, Lee and Bon-woong meet Keum-hong (a famous waitress) and both fall in love with her. Lee loves Keum-hong physically, vulgarly, and indecently. On the contrary, Bon-woong loves her spiritually and platonically with respect. So, he can do nothing but watch the torrid love affair between Lee and Keum-hong.

C'est l'histoire vraie du peintre fauviste Bon-woong et de Lee Sang, poète et écrivain. L'histoire se déroule pendant la période de l'impérialisme japonais en Corée. Il raconte l'histoire de la vie et des amours d'un poète particulier. Lors de la première exposition réussie de ses œuvres, Bon-Woong rencontre un jeune homme, Lee Sang, un poète au caractère vraiment étrange. Bientôt, Lee Sang et Bon-woong deviennent des amis proches, et ils se rencontrent presque tous les jours.

Alors en voyage a Backchon, les deux amies tombe tout les deux amoureux de la serveuse Gumhong.

영화의 배경은 일제강점기인 1932년 서울. 일본에서 미술 유학을 마치고 귀국한 본웅(김수철)은 귀국 전시회에서 청년시인 이상(김갑수)을 알게 된다. 그 후 이상의 평생 후견인이 되어준 본웅은 친구 이상을 위해 헌신하지만 이상 때문에 자신의 사랑을 포기한다. 만성 결핵을 앓고 있는 이상을 위해 본웅은 요양처를 마련해주나 이상은 그곳에서 기생 금홍(이지은)에게 빠져 무절제한 생활을 한다. 묘한 매력을 지닌 금홍에게 본웅마저 빠져들지만 본웅은 이상과 금홍을 지켜볼 수밖에 없다. 그러던 어느날 시 '오감도'가 문제가 되어 이상은 문학적인 위기를 맞게 되고, 금홍마저 이상과 크게 다투고 떠난다. 점점 황폐해지는 친구를 위해 본웅은 금홍을 찾아가지만 금홍은 돌아오려 하지 않고 본웅은 죽을 때까지 금홍을 잊지 못했던 이상의 유품을 전해주러 다시 금홍을 찾는다.
