Never the greatest player, perhaps most famously known for his self effacing line "perhaps I ought to chalk it" (in reference to his slap bald head reflecting light) in Chaz and Dave's massive smash hit of the 80s Snooker Loopy.
Nonetheless one of the original Matchroom team lads along with Davis & Griffith and laterly fondly remembered by the old ladies for his afternoon commentary sessions.
RIP Willie.

That is one unexpected eulogy. For my money the best commentator alongside Clive Everton - both employed before the days where you could only seemingly be a commentator if you had been world champion (irrespective of your communication skills).

Ha ha, very true - You couldn't move in the BBC commentators box without finding yourself non socially distant from a Davis, Hendry, Doherty, etc 😂

Now old Willy Thorne his hair's all gone
And his mates all take the rise
His opponent said cover up his head
Cos it's shining in my eyes
When the light shines down on his bare crown
It's a cert he's gonna walk it
It's just not fair giving off that glare
'Perhaps I ought to chalk it'
R.I.P.
