This film opens with a teenage girl killing her pet hamster by feeding it sleeping pills. A striking and disturbing moment as one might expect from Michael Haneke. Unfortunately the film from there onwards is rather dour and forgettable, excellent acting aside, a watchable but unexceptional study of a dysfunctional family in refugee 'haven' Calais. I haven't seen his American remake of his own Funny Games but this is certainly my least favourite of the Haneke movies I have watched to date.
