So glad I stuck with this. I didn’t know a thing about the movie beforehand except it came on the heels of the 1st great Cody/Reitman/Theron collaboration “Young Adult”. I was expecting a comedy which this isn’t. Literally the entire first half of the movie is pure aggravation as we witness the maddening stress of essentially single parenthood.
When the excellent Mackenzie Davis shows up as Tully that was a nice boost, but at the same time the story soon seemed to lose its point and my finger came millimeters from killing it on the remote. But wow, I’m sooo glad I trusted the movie to deliver a solid conclusion which it did.
I especially love the way the reveal wasn’t beat over our heads like a conventional Hollywood flick would’ve done. It just sorta sinks in with no particular “gotcha” moment. My only small criticism is that the denouement/epilogue scenes felt unnecessary and I would’ve preferred it to end with Charlize & Mackenzie’s last scene.
Anyway, very cool concept and respectful, non-kitschy treatment of the perils of parenthood. It never would’ve been a subject that interests me much so I’m glad I went into this blind.
