Discuss We Have Always Lived in the Castle

Did Charles at any point develop feelings for Constance or was he only interested in the money? The review that says this film was for people who have read the book isn't wrong, I feel like there are too many questions that maybe were explained in the book.

He might have had "feelings" for her, but they weren't healthy. It always amazes me when someone tells someone how much they love them and want to be with them and if they are rebuked, within seconds they begin berating this "love of their life!" Charles' abusive nature was not justified, but he unleashed it on everyone in the Blackwood family. He was such a controlling person, I'm not sure that he would have been content to have gotten only the money, but no one to rule over!

Thanks for your input. Indeed, if he had feelings they weren't healthy and developed because of her gentle, even submissive nature which appealed to his controlling side. My question had to do with his motivations to go and then stay at "the castle" with the girls, did he actually believe he had fallen in love with Constance or was he really just deliberately pretending only in order to get the money? Was he an abusive bf or simply a liar? Was he angry at her because she rejected him or because he realized he wasn't getting his hands on the money at all? I kinda of agree with what you said, just wanted to know what other people thought.
