Discuss The Three Musketeers

Other than Vincent Price's predictable but pleasing Richelieu, the casting in this glossy misfire is hopeless across the board. Gene Kelly's D'Artagnan is particularly obnoxious. Lana Turner and Angela Lansbury could have switched roles and nobody would have noticed. Some solid swordplay, but most of what goes in between is dreary, and it goes on forever.

I totally agree with you, that this film falls flat and isn't memorable. A somewhat similar (and also Dumas) story that I much prefer the movie of is The Corsican Brothers (1941). That movie has the right feel, look, and casting to it (though, still, I rate it a 7/10 as it has room for improvement).

Here's its TMDb Overview page: https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/43800-the-corsican-brothers

Swashbucklers are very much my kind of thing so I shall certainly check out The Corsican Brothers - thanks!

My favourites in the genre include the obvious classics - Captain Blood, The Prisoner of Zenda, The Sea Hawk, The Mark of Zorro. Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Tyrone Power, Basil Rathbone... to drag out the old cliche, they really don't make them like that any more!

I haven't seen it in years, but Richard Lester's 1970s film of The Three Musketeers would appear to be the closest thing we have to a definitive adaptation. I haven't seen the more recent 1993 and 2011 versions of the story but cannot imagine they are particularly memorable.

All those '30s and '40s swashbucklers you mentioned are great! Particularly any swashbuckler that includes Basil Rathbone I'm onboard!
