故事发生在中世纪的法国。碧翠丝翘首盼着父亲要从英国人的囚禁中归来，这时的她又怎会料到她远望着敬爱着的父亲竟会成为最可恨的人，他将把她和她的家人们带入凌虐羞辱的深渊。

Somewhere in France during the Middle Ages. Béatrice is impatient to see her father return from English captivity. She doesn't expect however that the father whom she loves from distance will be the most hateful person who will submit her and her family to abuse and humiliation.

François est un homme de son époque, toujours absent, sans arrêt en guerre. Ces temps passés sur le pré à égorger, brûler, violer, ont réduit cet esprit en miettes. Fait prisonnier par les Anglais en 1346 à la bataille de Crécy et libéré après cinq années, il revient meurtri et désabusé. Dans un château rythmé par un ennui pesant, Béatrice attend avec impatience le retour de ce père qu’elle désire ardemment connaître, mais qui, pendant son absence, a pactisé par la violence avec le Diable.

Ma il condottiero e' tor­na­to tra­sfor­ma­to dal con­flit­to; e' diventato un uomo cru­de­le e spie­ta­to, pra­ti­ca­men­te folle: abusa della fi­glia e de­ni­gra il fi­glio fin­che' Be'a­tri­ce non de­ci­de­ra' di ven­di­car­si uccidendolo con una pugnalata.

Durante cuatro años, Beatrice espera el regreso de su padre y de su hermano, que han caído prisioneros en la batalla de Crecy (1346). Durante su ausencia, ha tenido que luchar para conservar las propiedades de la familia. Cuando regresa su padre, convertido en un rebelde que se opone al orden establecido, Beatrice le demostrará su fortaleza moral.
