Eighty-year-old Alice Hargreaves is about to visit Columbia University to attend a reception in honor of author Lewis Carroll. As a child, Alice had a close friendship with the writer, and their relationship was the creative catalyst for Carroll's most beloved work. However, as Alice reflects on her experiences with the author, she realizes the complexity of their bond has had lasting, deeply felt ramifications.

Im Jahre 1932 feiert man den 100.Geburtstag von Lewis Carroll, dem Autor von "Alice im Wunderland" und zu diesem Anlaß soll der beinahe 80jährigen Alice Hargreaves in New York die Ehrendoktorwürde der Universität verliehen werden, weil sie das Vorbild für das kleine Mädchen in Carrolls Buch war. Hargreaves (Coral Browne) zeigt sich von dem Rummel um sie herum jedoch eher irritiert, fühlt sie doch schon die Todesnähe und wird in ihren Träumen und in Visionen von bedrohlichen Ausgaben von Carrolls Schöpfungen beleidigt. Gezwungenermaßen setzt sie sich mit Ereignissen auseinander, die in ihrer Kindheit stattfanden und muß ihre Beziehung zu Carroll (Ian Holm) neu bewerten, als sie feststellt, daß er sie tatsächlich geliebt hat und nur für sie schrieb...

Alice Liddell, la mujer que inspiró a Lewis Carroll el personaje de Alicia, tiene ya 80 años en 1932 y viaja a Nueva York para asistir al centenario del genial escritor. En América, Alice se asombra de la enorme popularidad de los libros de Alicia y de la figura del reverendo Hodgson que se escondía tras el seudónimo de Lewis Carroll. En ese contexto, Alice comienza a repasar su infancia como joven amiga y musa de Carroll.
