Discuss Dune

With a reported $165 million budget and a typical 1.5x for marketing we are looking at a $247.5 million film. This number dosent include any tax brakes from filming in certain countries or anything like that or any increases to marketing due to Covid. To break even Dune needs to make $412.5 million. Currently worldwide Dune has made $299 million. Some people dont know that studios dont get 100% of that money. They share it with cinema chains all over the world. I believe for the foreign market they get about 40% back. From China they only get 25% back, cause China is China. By the end of its run, when the film finally stops showing in all cinemas around the world, usually the rule of thumb is that studio would have gotten around roughly 60% of the profits the film has made.

In the first two weeks of the domestic release they usually get 90% of a films profit in those two weeks. So as of right now the film is at around $67.9 million loss. The film will more than likely not break even. The reason for this is because its been out in a vast majority of international markets already. There are only a few countries still left to open up in, including Australia.

Of course the numbers dont take into account the HBO Max numbers, or the Bluray sales, or any licensing deals. But the good news is that we will be getting a Part 2 no matter what the numbers are saying right now. And it can only go up from here. Hope this helps anyone that might be interested in the box office numbers. So in summary:

Budget: $247.5 Million

Current Worldwide: $299 Million

Needed to breakeven: $412.5 Million

Current Loss: $67.9 Million

Haha thanks! But like I said we dont have the HBO Max numbers. They must be pretty impressive to get the green light for a Part 2. I think it would have done better if they didnt do the release on HBO Max. And from what we know its getting most of its money from big IMAX screens. So thats a positive. On a not so good note, Denis said he probably wont start filming till next Fall. frowning_face

Do they count all theaters, even the little neighborhood ones? Because it was playing at the big places in my area (for at least $16) but we also have a couple of 'arthouse' type theaters that screened it. One charged $8.00 & the other only $6.00.

Yes all theaters. I dont know what the % cut is for the studios for smaller theater chains. Same thing bigger theaters do with matinee for like half the price. I think it dosent mater what the theaters charge since the studio gets a certain % no matter what. So of course the theaters want to charge the highest price possible without making the customer feel cheated.

Most of what I've read has indicated that this one is doing quite well, monetarily speaking. So much so, that the second installment has been green lit. It's not going to beat The Avengers anytime soon, nonetheless it's hardly John Carter either

Monetarily wise it is considered a 'flop' currently. Like I stated breakeven point is $412.5 Million before the studio starts to see any profits. And it being out for so long in multiple countries it just dosent seem doable currently. But we dont know the numbers for HBO Max and even if we did I dont think we would be able to verify them. We are going to get a Part 2 so Legendary and WB must have some good numbers to give the go ahead. I think I read that Legendary paid like 80% of the budget with WB paying the rest and also being the worldwide distributors.

Hope it does well.

Currently sitting at $331 million worldwide. Dont think it will reach $350 million before its cinema run. But probably close.

It's currently at $400,671,789. So did it finally break even?

Needs 12.5 Million to break even. But thats box office numbers. We dont know the HBO Max numbers. Obviously had to have been great to get the green light for Part 2. I think if they didnt do the same day release thing it could have easily made $600 million world wide.
