Американската премиера на „Ангелът унищожител“ ще бъде дирижирана от автора - Томас Адес. Метрополитън опера е един от поръчителите на творбата, заедно с Кралската опера „Ковънт Гардън“ и Кралския датски театър. Световната премиера е през месец юли 2016 г. на Залцбургския фестивал и получава награда като „Премиера на годината“ на International Opera Awards. Много от изпълнителите на ролите в Метрополитън вече са участвали в спектаклите на лондонска сцена през април и май 2017 г. За основа на либретото Том Кернс и Томас Адес използват сценария за едноименния филм от 1962 г. на Луис Бунюел и Луис Алкориса, превърнал се в класика на сюрреалистичното кино. Разказва се за група богати хора, поканени на вечеря, от която откриват, че не могат да си тръгнат. Сюжетът е изпълнен с алегории и сатира – осмиване на човешката природа, която таи дивашки инстинкти и прикрити тайни, дори когато на сцената стоят герои от изисканото, висше общество.

After the acclaimed Met premiere of Thomas Adès's "The Tempest" in 2012, the composer returned with another masterpiece, this time inspired by filmmaker Luis Buñuel's seminal surrealist classic "El Ángel Exterminador", during the 2017–18 season. As the opera opens, a group of elegant socialites gather for a lavish dinner party, but when it is time to leave for the night, no one is able to escape. Soon, their behavior becomes increasingly erratic and savage. The large ensemble cast tackles both the vocal and dramatic demands of Adès's opera with one riveting performance after another. Tom Cairns, who also penned the work's libretto, directs an engrossing and inventive production, using a towering wooden archway to trap the characters onstage. And Adès himself takes the podium to conduct the frenzied score, which features a host of unconventional instruments, including the eerie electronic ondes Martenot.

Après une soirée à l’opéra, des invités se retrouvent pour dîner chez l’aristocrate Edmundo Nóbile. Une fois le repas terminé, les convives se rendent compte qu’ils ne peuvent quitter la demeure. La porte est ouverte, mais une force invisible empêche qui que ce soit d’entrer ou de sortir…
