The sawmill in a northern Swedish village close down. Nils becomes unemployed. In order to cope with needs of his family, he is forced to travel south. His wife Karin and the children will stay in the village until further notice. Nils starts working at a factory. In addition to the job, he has been promised a good residence so that the family can move to him.

Sågen i den norrbottniska byn läggs ned, och Nils blir arbetslös. För att klara familjeförsörjningen tvingas han resa söderut. Hans fru Karin och barnen stannar tills vidare kvar i byn. Nils börjar arbeta på en fabrik. Förutom jobbet har han blivit lovad en god bostad så att familjen kan flytta till honom. Men personalchefen har lovat för mycket, och Nils får hålla till godo med ett rum i en barack.
