Discuss The Poison Rose

I'm usually not interested in the type of movie wherein an established actor tried to provide a platform for their kid. As well, I'm not particularly a fan of Travolta; he's done a few movies I like, but plenty I don't care to see. That said, this one sounds genuinely interesting, and has a pretty impressive supporting cast. I don't get out to the movies much anymore, but I'm definitely interested in this one.

Post mortem, this one got terrible reviews. I still haven't made the time to see it, guess I'll give it a try on stream. Disappointing.

I just watched it on Prime Video. It is a sort of modern film noir movie. Travolta plays a flawed detective named Avery. He drinks and gambles and has a rather large debt and trouble with the local hood in charge of gambling in LA. He gets a call from a lady he knew from Galveston Texas, his hometown, and though he doesn't want to go back there, she pays him well so off he goes. He is to check on the welfare of this lady's aunt, who is a long term resident at a mental hospital there but has not been heard from in some time. Morgan Freeman plays a local bookie who has done well for himself in Galveston. Also in Galveston is his old sweetheart. It doesn't take him long to solve the case, but he takes on another case while there, this time for his old sweetheart.

This was a fair attempt at making a film noir movie, a tough detective on a case, crime doesn't pay, bitter sweet ending, complete with saxophone in the background and Avery narrating the story to the viewer.

I wish Hollywood would make more of this type film. This one didn't hit it out of the park, but I enjoyed it.
