《索多玛的120天》取材于18世纪法国作家萨德的小说，而帕索里尼将时空转换到二次大战末期的意大利，影片所表现的背景是墨索里尼体制的最臭名昭著的一段史实——“萨罗共和国”是第二次世界大战最后18个月中法西主义的最后堡垒，在这段统治期间，有72000人惨遭屠杀，40000人被截肢，大量的人被送入集中营，一大批妇女，少年被奸污或鸡奸。萨罗是意大利人极力想忘却的一段历史。但帕索里尼在灵感的触发下，把这一历史暴行的内容和事实与萨德的小说的大量色情内容结合起来。帕索里尼改编了原著中最不堪入目的部分，随着时间、地点改变，而使他的影片带有明显的政治色彩。
