This indie flick is an absolute gem, writer/director Paul Cotter's impressive debut winning a dozen awards in 2009 (trailer here). But it's also his last? He never made a film after this.
I saw this movie ages ago and forgot the name, although I often remembered scenes. The other day by sheer chance I stumbled on it and watched it again, loving it even more. It starts with a nice breezy premise (young man is roped into a roadtrip with his dysfunctional parents) and seems mostly silly but slowly evolves into something with real depth. All the while it stays lighthearted enough to keep it fun. It dawned on me that this is exactly what's going on with the characters: they appear one way on the surface, polite and British, but repressed inside is a deep hole that needs fixing. The story of the human condition, eh?
For Cotter to pull this off with basically zero budget is a testament to the strength of the written material and minimalistic approach. Three actors, a van and a bunch of road. It's a bummer Cotter hasn't done any other projects since this.
