Two formerly rich men try to get back on their feet, counting on their respective son and daughters marriage prospectives. The two youths meet and fall in love not knowing about their parents plan and even when the truth comes out and they are told to break the engagement because they are not rich, they fight to stay engaged and marry.

Mario Moriconi, ein Strumpffabrikant, ist im Italien zu Beginn der 1960er Jahre, plötzlich insolvent. Er und seine luxussüchtige Gattin Lia wollen deshalb ihre attraktive Tochter Rossella mit einem jungen Mann aus bestem Hause verkuppeln. Der junge Luigino, Sohn und Erbe des angeblich steinreichen Barons Onofrio Onofri, soll ihr Schwiegersohn werden. Dann stellt sich aber heraus, dass auch diese Familie verarmte Adlige sind, die die gleiche Strategie verfolgt wie die Moriconis. Das Schloss erweist sich als Luftschloss, die Ländereien gibt es nicht mehr, und auch das Bankkonto ist leer. Ernüchtert will Mario seiner geliebten Tochter den Umgang mit Onofris Sohn verbieten - doch die beiden haben sich inzwischen leidenschaftlich ineinander verliebt.

I ragazzi passano presto dall'amicizia ad un amore vero e sincero per cui non vogliono saperne di obbedire ai propri padri, quando costoro - constatata l'inconsistenza delle reciproche finanze - decidono di far rompere il fidanzamento. Alla fine, a mettere tutto a posto, arriva una provvidenziale quaterna vinta al lotto.
