BIG TIME SPOILERS...

Here's the story of a guy who is so mindfudged over the murder of his family that he invents an alternate reality where he's living a perfect life with a perfect family in a dream house. Problems happen when the truth finds its way back into his head, ultimately leading to a big showdown with the real killers where he saves an innocent victim, avenges the death of his family and closes the loop.

As the house burns down, he runs back inside to his dead wife & kids... and wouldn't it have been the perfect ending if he stayed there, returning to his delusion (or if we accept the supernatural element, rejoining his family in the afterlife)?

To me that would've been the "happiest" ending while still being realistic, or at least consistent with how his mind works. Instead, he runs out to save himself, and what does he have left? A charred house, no family, no job (who would hire an ex-mental patient?), hated by everyone in town, and worst of all the horrible guilt of failing to save his family which is what prompted the whole delusion in the first place.

Sure, we get the footnote that he apparently becomes a best selling author living a ritzy life in NYC, but I didn't buy that. Too much of a contrived Hollywood ending for my taste. Other than that, I really thought this was a great story, original and clever, except for that crazy feel good ending. What a missed opportunity!
