Inspired by SNES Mario Kart?

So I finally bit the bullet and watched this. Coincidentally, I've also been playing a bit of retro SNES Mario Kart.

After spending quite some time attempting to perfect Ghost Track 1, power sliding around corners with Donkey Kong, I was stunned to see a character referred to as "DK", lots of drifting / power sliding, and a finale with a mountain which is stated as belonging to the DK character, i.e. DK Mountain.

Surely not mere coincidences?
