Berlin, 1943, during World War II. Martha Liebermann, an elderly upper-class Jewish woman, faces the decision of her life: should the widow of the world-famous and revered painter Max Liebermann continue to try to obtain an exit permit from the Nazis or, with the help of a resistance group, should she flee to Switzerland?

Berlin, 1943, während des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Martha Liebermann, eine ältere Jüdin aus der Oberschicht, steht vor der Entscheidung ihres Lebens: Soll die Witwe des weltberühmten und verehrten Malers Max Liebermann weiterhin versuchen, von den Nazis eine Ausreisegenehmigung zu erhalten, oder soll sie mit Hilfe einer Widerstandsgruppe in die Schweiz fliehen?

Nemški impresionistični slikar Max Liebermann (1847–1935) se je iz Berlina, ki je postal preglasen in moteč za ustvarjanje, umaknil v vilo ob jezeru Wannsee. Leta 2006 so hišo, ki jo je nacistična oblast zaplenila družini Liebermann, preuredili v muzej, kjer je na ogled štirideset njegovih slik, posebno mesto pa so namenili tudi tragični usodi njegove soproge Marthe Liebermann (1857–1943), rojene Marckwald, Judinje, ki je v 86. letu namesto deportacije izbrala prostovoljno smrt.
