I've been binging on Valentino content lately. By content, I mean:
-articles on him -interviews about him -pictures of him -youtube biographies of him -watched 2 of his films (The Sheik & The Son of Sheik)
Has any Valentino fan watched the season 5 American Horror Story? You might want to do so just to glimpse on a character based on him. The season itself was ok, I preferred the first 2 seasons of AHS but the overly graphic sexual nature of season 5 was off putting because it was sooo over-the-top meant to titillate but not much else. But the scenes on Valentino I loved, I loved the 20s look and fashion and wish the season was dedicated to this era and on Valentino instead.
I've been checking on film biographies or films about him and I found 3 with 2 using Italian actors and 1 Russian (a Tartar). The other 2 don't look anything remotely like Valentino, the most recent 1 is an Italian American actor who resembles him somewhat and speaks Italian fluently too but it is just a short film. The other portrayal is from AHS tv show and he too looks more like Valentino than the other 2 but none has his brownish sunburned tan.
I have the 1977 film Valentino but have yet to watch it.
So from all of these readings I came upon this:
Valentino also would have made one heck of a Dracula. Had he lived to make it, it would have had to be a real pre-code Dracula, to boot. I state this with my apologies to Bela Lugosi fans (and I Love Lugosi). Valentino would have taken the whole “dangerous sex” thing to a new level with a part like that.
And I CAN SEE IT! Can you see it? I just watched the 1931 Dracula film today and as dangerous and exotically charismatic Lugosi was, he wasn't dangerously sexual or sensual and I can see Valentino being one.
I also just saw both The Sheik and The Son of Sheik yesterday and a scene reminded me of the potent sexual mystery he embodies:
Even his views on death sounds vampiric no?
